You mentioned replacing the heater door. If you mean the blend doors which allows you to regulate the heat/cooling for each side of the vehicle you do not need to pull the dash. There is a replacement called the Heater Treater that you can use to replace the blend doors. The kit is about 140.00. I installed one in my Jeep. The only thing is you will not have individual control of heat/cooling between drive/passenger sides.

As far as the gauge problem make sure your battery is good, not just starting the engine and the ground clamp is clean and tight.
