Technically the landowwner is supposed to notify the renter by Sept 15 that he will not have the farm for next crop year. The renter may have done some fertlize inputs,ag lime or perhaps some tillage for next year otherwise. If an agreeable relationship exists between you and him you & no soil amendments have been applied this fall you could probably inform him before the end of the year that your farm is rented to someone else for 2012, and get by. Could get into a legal issue if the renter understands current lease law, but there is a question here if you did not have a written lease whether or not a legal rental agreement ever existed between you and him. Maybe the forum legal eagle will weigh in on this.
