The OP manual for the 1480 IH diesel combine with 436 or 466 engine states that #30 is perfered and they recommend oil change at 200 hrs. In the early / mid 80's IH said 15-40 was OK in those engines as long as you changed it at 100 hrs. Said the reason was that the IH cam lobe and lifter design would slowly destroy the viscosity improvers in the multi viscosity oil.
Otherwise, less cold start wear should happen with a multi vis oil in an engine designed for it.
