The actual leak was in the brake master cylinder, and the leaking fluid went into the vaccuum power brake booster, where it was then pulled into the engine and burned. A tell-tale sign was white smoke from the exhaust each time the brakes were applied, but that probably would not be noticeable with a catalytic convertor.
