As a bowhunter myself I can see this happening if his bow draw weight is set to high. Often for new bowhunters it seems to be bragging rights to say I shoot at 80# etc. I shoot mine at 68# but I can draw that sitting down as I hunt from elevated stands.
If he needs to point his bow in the air just to draw it back and then settle in on sight picture 1 of 2 things - bow draw weight is to high or 2 new archer and he has not been practicing enough to develop the strength needed to draw back. It takes practice to be proficient. Bow hunting can be a humbling experience but in the end you become a much better hunter and woodsman.
