I'm not familiar with MF valves but if they come with a detent position in the valve then you may be experiencing resitance when you encounter the detent ball which would be hanging down a little low and you are having to force the ball back up into its working position. if it is the detent ball I'm surprised that it didnt just drop out into the valve barrel when you removed the valve.
