Always mention which 4000 you have - pre 65 4 cylinder or 65/newer 3 cyl. 4 cyl didn't have a canister though so you must have a 3 cyl - early one. Unscrew the pressure sender in the left side of the block and install a guage to check pressure. Should read around 60 +/-. I have heard of others having trouble with the gasket at that canister being made poorly - China? if you haven't tossed it out try putting your old gasket back in and see if that helps. As TMO says you can convert that filter to a spin on too.
