Horsepower hours per gallon is a measure of an engine's fuel efficency at a given horsepower output. For any engine the number will vary depending on the throttle setting, horsepower output. It is calculated by operating the engine at a constant horsepower for a given period of time and measuring the fuel used. The horsepower setting is multiplied by the operating time in hours and divided by the fuel used in gallons, hence the term horsepower hours per gallon.
For example; consider a 100 horsepower tractor operated at 60 horsepower for two hours. The fuel consumed was 12 gallons. We have 60 x 2 divided by 12 = 10 horsepower hours per gallon @ 60 horsepower. Note, the fuel consumption was measured at 60 horsepower, therefore that number needs to be stated.
To determine the gallons of fuel used per hour we just divide the horsepower setting by the horsepower hours per gallon. In our example; we have 60 divided by 10 = 6 gallons per hour when operated at 60 horsepower constant output.
