It's a generational thing, don't worry about it. Most people that age accept tattoos even if they don't have any.
In our youth we all did the stupid things that older and younger generations find repulsive too: long hair, crew cuts, shaved heads, mowhawks, cowboy hats, big ugly belt buckles, wierd clothes, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, impractical hot rod cars, noisey ugly motorcycles, not wearing a motorcycle helmet, public drunkeness, beer guts. These were all socially unacceptable to most people but folks our age still like these things or are at least more tolerant of them.
Tatttoos won't kill nearly as many people as smoking cigarettes or drunk driving ever will, and they don't stink up the house or hurt the kids either.
