But unfortunately, people ARE judged by how they look, whether they like it or not, and whether its fair, or not. That's one of the problems that many folks have- as my dad used to say, "Its not what you want, its what you get that counts." You can say "It ain't fair" all you want, but thats just the way it is.
You're lucky to have a job where that doesn't matter, and I'd be willing to bet its something that depends on a skill of some kind, and doesn't involve much interaction with the public. But its a fact that employers DO discriminate, because there is the perception that one who gets tattoos and piercings is a little on the rebellious side, and may be difficult to work with, not to mention that many potential customers are reviled by it (as shown in the rest of this tread).
If you're the best TIG welder in 3 counties, you can probably get work no matter how you look; but if you're a young person with minimal skills trying to get a start in the grown-up world, its a deal breaker, because there are a lot of more presentable people out there vying for the few jobs available.
