My EMS class involved removing junk in a emergency. Never had to do it in thirty plus years, and see no reason so far to ever have to do it.
Tatoos are mild now days, anyone seen the hole in the ear lobes? That isn't the limit, the newest one is a hole the size of a fifty cent piece just below the lower lip that goes clear inside the mouth. Yes, you can see their teeth! Talk about a nice look, or fashon statment!
There is no place on the human body that they do not run rods through---male and female. And yes, they put them their also in case you were wondering.....again male and female.
One dude probably 16, had a rod between EVERY hump in his spine. And I will take a wild guess by many of the other places the rods were placed, they did not work for a living, rather just laid on the bed all day, and cry in pain.
It is simply to get attention, and it has been that way for years and generations I suppose.
