Depends some on what speed and distance you are towing.
When I get up from my puter in about 5 minutes the next job I have to do is tow a 79 chevy pu. It has full time 4wd. I usually just put the transfer case in neutral and turn the key to at least the first position. Works good. Sometimes I will leave the engine running but not sure it makes any difference. Someone who knows the transfer case better than me should weigh in (OH ALLEN).
Now I will qualify what I am doing here. I just have the hitch so I can use this truck to get multiple pieces to outlying locations. Hardly ever faster than 25 mph and rarely further than 8 miles.
