I am self employed with my son as a partner. We cary liability ins. but are not required to carry workman's comp. We couldn't collect on it even if we did pay into it because we work for ourselves. Just because someone has liability ins. doesn't mean you can't be sued if that person got hurt on your job site. The liability only covers him if he does some sort of damage to your property. Liability and workman's comp. are two different types of insurance all together. The comp. will cover him medically if he gets hurt on the job. In my case, my own medical policy pays for my injuries. An insurance certificate will tell you what coverage's the contractor carries.
