Taking a plug wire off a plug and jump spark to the plug was a way to check for a bad plug at least 70 years ago and probly longer. It will cause a bad plug to fire. A lot of simple checks like that have been lost over the years. Like switching two plug wires to pop a slug out of a carburetor jet.
