Another thing might be worth looking at would be the fuel pressure regulator.
The other half's car (although not a dodge pickup) had a surging issue.. really bad upon startup, but eventually seemed to get better.. Never got a idiot light.. I checked the fuel pressure, but it was within spec at the time.. In hindsight, I should have checked the pressure with the car running and watched to see if it changed while the surging occurred.. But, I was always told to do the check with car not running, but ignition on.
Her dad took it somewhere a couple times and they changed this and that (on advice of one of her friend's husbands), but it still hunted and surged.. Last week, she was backing out of her driveway and it just quit. Took it to a shop.. they changed the regulator, and it's been fine since.. AND NO MORE SURGING..
