Does anybody have any real practical experience with Johnes disease in feedlot cattle? I had an Angus steer that was almost finished in June or July, but in the bad heat in July,he got diarhea and went down hill bad. By 2 weeks ago,I decided he wasn't going to get better on his own. HE had a temp of 103.2. The vet gave him a shot of Exceed, put a magnet in him in case it was hardware and took a fecal and blood sample. The samples came back positive. From everything I've been able to find,it only infects calves 6 months and under. Is that correct or not? The steer is doing well as far as how he looks and how he is eating, but he still has diarhea to some extent. I have him segregated in another pen. Is there any danger to the other cattle in the concrete finishing lot if I put him back in there? Are they too old to get it now? Do I need to be afraid,if I do,that there might be some heifers in there next spring that will be turned out in the summer to be bred? Can they carry it from there and pass it on to their calves that will be born a year later? Or would they have had to have contracted it before 6 months of age or so themselves?
