Well, not really, Vern. I did misdemeanor "public defender" work for about a year when I first started practicing law. Believe me, nobody's gettin' rich. We made $110 per case, plus another hundred if it went to trial- wasn't much of a money maker. Have to have judges anyhow, per the Constitution, and they always have caseloads that are too large. And public defender program is always the target of budget cutbacks, because nobody likes the program, for obvious reasons.
Pretty much everybody in the system views it as a big PITA.
