Lack of residue , in my opinion makes for a much healthier plant. Our winter wheat ground used to look like Allan's does there. We have went to a reduced tillage, not minimum or no-till, but a reduced operation. Not really sold on it yet though. Seems to have much more disease and pest problems. Always another chemical to fix the problem. If we could get a good enough stand of wheat EVERY year to control wind erosion, I would have our wheat ground look like this every year. In our area, the black ground will raise a better crop 9 years out of 10.
