Did you change the ignition switch or otherwise muck around with the wires? At first glance I'd say that the fuel solenoid wire is simply hooked to the starter circuit terminal at the switch... Otherwise I'd say that the switch is on it's deathbed... but you should also notice a dead instrument cluster with the key turned on... I'm not overly familiar with how the fuel solenoid circuit is wired exactly on that thing as mine are all manual shutoffs... but I suspect it's pretty simple. The old Lucas ignition switchs also seem to have a self destruct timer... set to blow when you need it most.
