Ear plugs and muffs ; god that must have been bad . However as far as safety cabs here in the UK go , most I believe did still have rubber mountings . As for John Deere many years ago more often than not the German built ones were fitted with Duncan cabs . Where my father worked they had a 1973 2130 with one . by no means a Q cab but did still have a fibberglass box fitted around the dash area wich did still cut the noise down that you could just about stand it or it was quite okay with earmuffs . However when the gearbox packed in while it was being repaired they were loaned a 2030 which all that was missing . By god was that noisy . Dad was alright being used to it working most of the tmie in a noisy mill . Me ridding around with him as a kid however , he had to go and get the farms only pair of earmuffs for me . The farm did have a 1977 2130 with a Duncan cab by which time the nois regulations had come in therefore that was not too bad thogh I would say on the limit .
As for safety . The two tractors which I saw at a show once , one was a 6030 with a Stolper while the other was a 4020 with a Crendo [i think that was what it was called] That roll frame in the Stolper well , being flat bar rather than box or tube not only do I doubt that ever to be allowed here but would not withsatnd too much . Down a mountain sideways on then I should thnik you have had it . Mind you though if you fell from enough height without a seatbelt I doubt your chances are all that geat . There again as far as the average roll over goes though the cab would not surive looking at them I would say that they would be enough to prevent you from getting crushed . It has been known for non safety cabs to still save the drivers . I know it happened somebody lost a Nuffield with a Winsam cab of the side of a sillage clamp once and despite the cab needing to be replaced it still saved the driver .
If I was in a position to own real tractors myself not only would I do it anyway , but I really would like to get one with a non sound insulated cab and somehow insulate it just to porve it can be done . And more to the point one that was never latter done with sound proofing like some where . I am sure it could be done , make an old tractor still cut and run with the best of them . Obviously if it is a UK approved safety cab you can't interfere with the structure , well unless you have it re-tested , but nevertheless it is a challenge I would love to get my teath into .
One final question . Are there now in the USA and regulations regarding rollover and sound insulation on cabs ? Thanks David
