There is a free operating system call Linux. There are many variations of Linux and some can be run from your DVD/CD drive to try it out (live CD). Have somebody download the 'ISO' (I'd try Ubuntu or Knoppix) and burn it to a CD for you. Set your computer to boot from the DVD/CD drive and try it out. If you like it, install it (it will be faster than from the optical drive). If you don't know a lot about computers it would help if you could find someone to help customize it for you. You can even run most Windows programs with "Wine" added to the install.
