I assume you're going through Canada, as it's nearly twice the distance to go around through the US. Don't expect to get into Canada these days without a passport. Also, you better not have a DUI or felony conviction on your record. If you do, don't think about entering Canada as they'll put you through a couple of hours of hell, then boot you back over the river. If you have any convictions, you have to go through a lengthy process (several weeks, I understand) to get permission to enter the country.
Quite frankly, it's a nice but boring drive between Detroit and Niagara. The major attraction along the way is Point Pelee National Park, which is famous as a major stop in the migration of Monarch butterflies. I've never seen it, but if you come through in September, you probably should check it out.
