The damage occured because the Army Corps of Engineers didn't have enough sense to release water from the Gavins Point dam until they had no choice, and then they had to release SOOO much that it caused flooding and wreaked havoc all the way down the Missouri River. Thousands and thousands of acres of crop ground, which was already planted, are now lost and probably will not raise a crop for many years to come. In addition to the crop acres lost, many, many fine people lost their homes, barns, and other buildings, and many businesses in towns all up and down the river are now just gone.
