That magneto was designed to discharge its energy into a low resistance (once arc occurs) load and NOT a high resistance like a typical resistor plug, which was developed more after mags were used less often as I recall. They have a limited energy and Id prefer it be discharged across the plugs gap to ignite the fuel versus it being wasted as I squared R heat energy dissipated by a resistance.
The 3116 non resistor is in the heat range of 386 or hotter 388 but Ive never had any problems locating the 3116, try elsewhere.
