I like Colt 1911's, .45ACP. Very good stopping power.
That being said, a shotgun also works very well and exact aiming isn't needed. An Ithaca Model 37 Deerslayer with a 20" barrel is compact and with a bottom eject and silky smooth slide, cannot be beat.
