I was there in 1958 too... as a patient at the USAF Hospital recovering from an auto accident that happened in Morocco. I was "shipped" there in June '58 because it was the closest base to my home in Southern Michigan that could handle my problems (splintered left femur and knee ankylosis). I was there until April 1959...lived down town Rantoul in an apartment above the furniture store across from the movie theater after getting married in December. I loved the place, got good treatment by everyone, the base had a terrific NCO Club "The Chandelle", the apartment rent was cheap and the place was nice....About as good as it could get for a newly married enlisted couple in the military. Far and away the best base I was ever on in my 5 1/2 years in the USAF. I've been back several times, saw the HCOP show in '07. It's really sad to see the base deteriorate, too bad they can't utilize more of it, it was a great installation, really helped the town's and local area's economy and the locals were really good to the G.I.'s Stupid government should consider things like that before they just up and close bases. But the Stupid government should consider a lot of things they don't.

Dad bought the 202 new in 1962, and I recall quite clearly going to the dealer with him to sign for it.
