Can't answer the rent question but it was (maybe still is) shotgun/slug only in OH and WV was rifle. I was just like you. saved up, bought a 44 mag saddle rifle from the pawn shop. Got my WV license, and away we went. Used to pulling the trigger in OH and seeing a white belly then dressing the deer and being home a few minutes later. Shot one in the same spot at a distance of around a hundred yards just at daylight with the rifle. Found it about 3PM. Went back the next day to fill the tag and took the 12 gauge, was back home by noon.
