My uncle just got a Ranger about a month or so ago.. It gets used on the drain tiling operation he runs.. He too don't know how they did without it.
He has a "roof" and the better glass windshield..
I'd say it in fact sucks dust in, as well as making the operator area quite warm (I'd say from the heat radiating from the engine compartment). Seems like the operator area is always dirtier/dustier than the rest of the unit (unless in muddy conditions).
I'd think without the windshield you'd get airflow, and it'd at least cool it down a little, but never ran one without the windshield to say one way or the other.
