They'll understand, just explain clearly what you want to do. You might want to go one step above the secretary that answers the phone though.
If you know your delivery guy, I think I'd ask him.... he'll have real world experience if it's a good idea.
If it was me, I'd thread the pipe and be done. You might even be able to do alot of it with precut/threaded nipples, it'll cost more but you'll make up for it in time savings.
Don't get me wrong, I'm all about saving money, but this is something I wouldn't want to risk. If the fill pipe happens to break at a plastic joint, he'll fill your basement with fuel before he know's it's leaking.
