A 12V coil should have at least 3 ohms resistance across the primary studs on the coil with all the wires disconnected. A 6V will have about 1.5 ohms and can only be used in a 12V application with a added series resistor in the lead from the ignition switch. It would be possible for a resistor if so equipped to short and have less resistance than normal or be improperly hooked up. In any case your points are being burnt by to much current flowing across them. Also while you are taking readings check the charge voltage to make sure it's not to high.
