That's a tax and it continues today but in a much more subtle manner. Nowadays it's passed through so many middlemen, you don't realize that it's STILL a portion of YOUR labor that is being taken.
As to the OP, the government is so big and pervasive with so much waste and pork barrel spending, it's hard to say where to start. Here in Michigan, the new governor (Snyder) gored just about everyone's ox, myself included, and now people want him recalled. Heck, I want him to run for President.
