I can't keep a cat killing mice in the barn because we live so close together. Neighbors on each sidealways pet and give em goodies so they hang out at their front door. I catch mice that way and throw them in one' barn and put them in an open basement window on the other one that opens right into our yard..............
Something else that works for the rats that don't take up so much room is a 3ft or so piece of 6"PVC with a cap on one end. Smear some peanut butter on the inside about 8 inches or so down and fasten it upright by a ledge where they can get to the top easy. They try for the peanut butter and fall in. Just have to hold it upright and dump it right in a neighbor's window.
