As crazy as it sounds try vineger. The regular vinegar that you can get in the grocery store won't have enough punch to knock out a woody plant but 20% or better concentration can be fairly effective. Organic rules won't let you go beyond 8% concentration, but if you aren't organic vinegar is a fairly low cost alternative.
