Mont. Wards tractor

I was just given a 1985 wards 11hp lawn tractor but a dog has chewed the wiring at and around the starter/alt. I've put everything back together but the alt. wires. One is black and sends 7amp ac to the lights, the other one is red and had a diode that changed the current to 3amp dc for the batt. My problem is that all I need is the diode but wards will only sell me the whole alt. assembly at fifty+ dollars. I don't want to pay $50 for a $.10 diode. Can anyone help?
