A few months ago I purchased a Brother laser printer for $49. It of course uses toner cartridges, which I checked the price for them before purchasing the printer. It is B&W only.
I have a Hewlett Packard Officejet printer that can use either normal size cartridges or extra capacity ones for a much cheaper per page printing price.
The Officejet uses four cartridges so that you need replace only the color that you are out of for additional savings.
An Officejet printer also allows for the printing of several sizes of paper, and can automatically print on both sides if you select that feature.
Mine is a refurbished unit which I purchased at an Ebay auction.
All I'm saying is that there are options to printer ink.
