Old - a few days ago I was checking my electric fence, and my beagle sized mutt dog came with me. She was nosing around and I heard a frantic bleating noise. She'd flushed out a little fawn that we'd been seeing around the place. I squalled at her, but she took off chasing it anyhow. I ran after them, but they were leaving me behind. They ran over a hill and out of view, but all at once, here came the dog running back to me with Mama deer right on her butt! That deer chased the dog up to within 50 feet of me before she stopped and put on a snorting stomping show. It reminded me of the scene from Lonesome Dove, where he chased an indian over the hill, but came tearing back with a whole army of them chasing him.
I was rooting for the deer. . .
She's a good little farm dog, but she loves a chase.
I've hit fawns twice with the sickle mower, but was lucky both times and didn't hurt them.
