Potatoes are weird. you can't assume they are dead, as soon as you plant something else over them, they spring up and catch up with the rest. I got some 3 feet tall and falling over, some still under there wondering what an eye is for. Best to not worry about it till November.. yeah I like to cultivate with narrower tires than that too. this is a job where the [10 by's] still have a place on the working farm.
