Lyle, you certainly are a persistent troll. This thread will get poofed, even without Bushog's racist remarks.
Like it or not, the world economy runs on oil. It's been that way for close to a hundred years and it will probably be that way for at least another 50 years. Oil replaced coal, and eventually something will replace oil. I think it's safe to say that biofuel will never replace oil, for many reasons. The replacement might be various forms of renewable energy, it might be nuclear (possibly fusion), but grain-based ethanol won't do the job and other biofuels won't do the job either.
Why not biofuel? Well for one thing, the jury is still out on whether ethanol production creates more energy than it uses. The fact that this is even up for debate should be reason enough to look elsewhere. Another thing, as you point out, are the resources required to produce it. Land is one thing, but water is an even scarcer resource. For many years corn has been produced quite cheaply on the High Plains using water from the Ogallala Acquifer. That gravy train is coming to an end, and it makes no sense to use the little water that's left to produce a relatively small amount of biofuel.
