That solenoid closes the main metering jet when the solenoid is denergized (it's spring loaded closed). I presume it's there to shut off the fuel and prevent a hot engine from running on/dieseling at shutdown.

The adjustment screw on the solenoid sets the carb high speed mixture.

The solenoid should be wired to the "I" (or "IGN") terminal on the ignition switch.

Incidentally if it was the guy at the carb shop that told you that solenoid controls the fuel pump, I'd be looking for different carb shop(!)
