Just went through this last weekend. I'm assuming you timed the gears correctly? If you have the gears timed like is shown in the picture then there is only one way for the pump to go on as it is indexed to the gear. There are timing marks by the upper right bolt on the pump where it bolts to the engine. Set the line on the pump to one line down from the 0 and it should start after you get it bled.
