I grew up in an irrigated farming valley along the Colorado River in Southern CA. My brother and I water skied behind a flat head Ford V8 dune buggy on the irrigation canals around the valley off and on all summer. Only risk was the narrowness of the canal and the check gates every mile or so. And, the driver couldn't look back too often at the risk of running off the canal bank. Don't ask how I know.
I really wish we had taken some pictures of it. My kids are in awe at our inventiveness at finding fun things to do in the 50's and 60's.
