Jay - I've done it both ways. Found split wood seasons a bit faster dumped randomly than when stacked tight. And of course it eliminates the labor to stack.
Downside is random wood takes up more space - you can't fit as much into the shed as when it's stacked.

Tip: If your shed has a dirt floor, cover the floor with old pallets or similar before dumping the wood to keep the bottom of the pile off the ground.
