You could get a Deere 30 or 40 series articulated tractor in the 15 to 20 thousand range that probably has an updated motor (50 series). As with any tractor service records are very important to making a decision as to buying. I would somewhat leery of buying one in the "auction row" history unknown. We're running an 8430 with a 50 series motor here and the fuel economy is pretty good. Pretty good power but does not have it like something that would have 550 cubes or more. Anything with several thousand hours you will want to see if the hi-lo has been replaced, axle bearings within tolerance, coolant conditioner has been used among other things. A trip to the dealer would be a good idea if you were to pursue this idea.
