I have sitting in my back yard, in many heavy pieces, a LeBlond Regal lathe from the shop I work at. The Westinghouse motor, original to this 60 year old machine, is currently wired for and running well on 480 volts. I need to change it over to 240 to run it on a VFD here at my home. Problem is the cover has been off the junction box for some time, and with age, all the wired are a nice, dirty black. The numbers no longer show. Question is how do I identify the windings so I can change voltage? I don't do too much work other than on occasion wire up new equipment on 3 phase equipment. I know how to work safely around these voltages, I often work around high power radio transmitters with 2-5kV supplies at several amps.
I know there are some fellows here that have dealt with this. There must be some trick of the motor trade to identify unmarked (or lost marking) wires. I sure don't want to replace the motor, it is a big 203 frame.
