Well, Bret, there you have it. The general consensus is when a manufacturer offers a Lifetime Warranty...you shouldn't expect them to honor it. The general public has been conditioned over the years to not believe what they are told....even to the point that you are being an ungrateful illegitimate for asking that deal offered at purchase time, be honored.
Used to be, when we shopped, one of the great selling points was the Lifetime Warranty boldly displayed on or with the product. This meant it was built to last a lifetime and if it didn't, the manufacturer would make it good. This instilled confidence in the product's durability and it insured your purchase was a sound investment.
Several years down the road.....the product fails. You contact the manufacturer and remind them of the implied Lifetime Warranty when you bought it and they say...screw off....lifetime doesn't mean forever..it means until it breaks! Therefore, when the product breaks..it's life is over...whether that was 30 years....or 30 minutes.
Then, the educated and conditioned public sides with these shysters and tosses the go buy a Chinese product in your face. Being treated as such by your fellow Americans is enough to make you choose a different maker...simply because they have been found to be untrustworthy and not good for their word. Plain facts are: They lied to you.
Perhaps you can find another American maker who hasn't fallen into this disgusting rut. Bluegrass always made a fine hammer....I don't know if they still do, or not. Plumb did as well. I have a Plumb that is close to 30 years old...a tad ugly, but still performs as it ever did.
