Dang Little Rotor Clip!

When I removed the rotor, points, condenser, and new plugs from the shrink-wrap, there was this little round clip with a prong on it; had no idea what it was. But I saved it. The rotor didn't feel right when I installed it. But was the first time I'd been into a N-Series distributor so I discounted it as a spongy, timing-advance mechanism. Encountering problems, the tractor would hardly start, and when it did, would only run a few seconds. So I referred to the manuals. Thought of this little clip again. Slipped it on the distributor the way it was shown. But the rotor wouldn't fit. So I figured it was used with a different distributor. Weeks wore on trying to get my new 8N to run. It had been starting and running perfectly until I let it set a month or two this spring. Gas had been used up or leaked out. So I'd been through the carburetor clean out, and electrical replacements that appeared overdue. Still, no resolution to the problem. Tractor would run very poorly. Even drove it around a little. Still not right; not even close. I'd ordered the Parts Catalog; a hint from someone here on the board. They said that its exploded diagrams were of significant benefit. So I'm looking at the distributor. And here's this little clip that was still safely lying in one of those ashtrays we don't use anymore. I'd tried to install it, but it wouldn't go. Then on the adjoining page was the distributor from 1953 model Fords. Whatdaya know! This distributor illustration has the little clip shown with the tang pointing upward. Not downward as I'd been trying to install it; and as shown in the manuals to which I had been referring. So I grab the little clip and head for the tractor. It's on in a second, and fits fine upside down; or with the tang pointing up. And know what. The tractor starts and runs fine. Finally, after months of anguish, I had my new 8N back. Whoooooooooooooope! Although there is reference to this problem in the archives of the board, I never ran across them until I searched using "rotor clip". But maybe this long dissertation will help someone with a similar problem. Good luck and happy tractoring! Gale 8N291644
