Question 1: Did you loosen the screw right under the distributor body? There is a screw with a nut on it that locks the distributor from turning on the collar. If you loosened this, the collar is seized to the distributor body. You will have to remove the distributor to unseize. Question 2: The knob is pulled out to add oil to the distributor bushings. Question3: You are correct in your assumption.
