I'd have to watch it again in a rerun, but the History Channel had a show called The Toys That Built America. They went in to Lindsay making detailed Matchbox toys, then Mattel Hot Wheels came along kind of forcing Matchbox to cheapen things because they were loosing market share or some such thing. It could have been that somebody new was put in charge? It's been a while since I saw that episode, and I don't always pay that close attention in the first place. They did go in to why detail and quality slipped though.
I had a real nice Matchbox Fordson Major with orange wheels and a Massey Ferguson combine that were super nice when I was a kid. I found another Major that needs tires, has black rubber o-rings instead, and a combine that's pretty broken up.
