Don't grind them totally down. Grind them just enough so you can work the wheels off. Then do your painting and then work the wheels back on. I don't care for the looks of those press on caps. On rear axles I like to fit a thin peice of brass tubing cut to length that just fits over the axle and secure it to the axle with a dab of glue. It looks like a real axle with the wheel clamped to it then. Loren, the Acg.
