I just purchased a "63 4010 diesel. First tractor ever and first diesel ever so its all new to me. My problem is the tractor is very hard to start when cold. By cold I mean first use of the day and it can be 60 degrees or 80 degrees. When I bought it, it was probably 90 degrees and didn't seem to have much trouble starting. But now, while cranking, white smoke comes out the exhaust and it tries to start and eventually one or two cylinders hit and it spins a little faster and eventually, it will usually take off. Spray a little ether in the air cleaner and soon as the ether gets to the cylinders, it takes right off. Once it starts, at an idle, no smoke whatsoever. About 1000 rpm and up with no load, smokes blue. Put a load on it, smoke mostly turns black. With no load, at 2000 rpm, there is a miss or flutter.
From what I have read here, seems like low compression is the problem but are there other areas to look at? Others have said that with low compression, white smoke continues even after starting. I only have white smoke during start.
I have checked and set the timing at 8 degrees. My pump ends in 4AF and has timed end inj scribed on the timing cover. What I have read here, this seems to be where it needs to be set.
Any thoughts, suggestions, or opinion are greatly appreciated. Thanks.
